Polyester Operations

The Company's polyester plants production technology were acquired from Zimmer Aktiengesellschaft of Germany. These plants are designed to produce short and long fiber polyester yarn to meet a requirement from textile industries. With its up stream integration, Company's polyester products are well positioned in the Indonesia?s polyester industry.

Production

The Total annual production capacity of two polyester plants owned by the Company is 210,000 tons for polymer/polyester chips, 110,250 tons for polyester filament yarn and 85,750tons for polyester staple fiber.

The polyester production process has two stages, the polymerization stage, which produce polymer, and spinning stage, which further process polymer into polyester yarn and polyester fiber. Approximately 53% of polymer product are used to produce polyester filament, 40% are used to produce polyester fiber and the remaining 7 % are processed into polyester chips. The polyester yarn and fiber are mostly produced through direct spinning method, this method gives an advantage in the form of lower production cost and consistent product quality.

The main raw materials used in polyester manufacturing are purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and MEG. MEG is obtained from the company's EG plant, while PTA is obtained from a number of suppliers in Indonesia.

Products

The Company produces pre-oriented polyester yarn (POY), spin drawn polyester yarn (SDY), polyester staple fiber (PSF) and polyester chips. Polyester filament yarn is an intermediate product, which can be further processed down stream into weaving and knitting polyester fabrics. In 2003, about 23 % of the company's POY was sold to PT. Glorindo Fileatex. The SDY was sold to down stream industries and used in manufacturing georgette and weaving fabric.

The PSF is the main raw material used by the textile industry to produce polyester spun yarn, which is widely used for apparel and house hold goods. PSF can be blended with others fibers. PSF is also used for manufacturing carpet pile, toy, sleeping bags, padding, sport shoes and diapers.

Sales

In 2003, the polyester division recorded a total sales of Rp. 1,001 billion. About 65% of the Company's polyester filament sales were made to more than 20 textile companies in Indonesia, while the remaining 35 % were exported more than 14 textile companies in Asia. Until now, PT. Polychem Indonesia Tbk is still one of the largest polyester filament suppliers in Indonesia, with an estimated market share of 70% (exclude internal consumption by integrated polyester manufacturers)

In 2003 the Company sold 88% of its polyester staple fibre to more than 20 companies in Indonesia or represented approximately 19% of the RSF domestic sales, while the remaining 12% were exported to customers in Asia and Middle East.

Polyester market overview

The largest and fastest growing demand amongst all man made fibers in the world is the demand for polyester fiber. The inherent functional characteristics of polyester, combined with a steady stream on its technological advances, has triggered a rapid growing demand around the globe.

Indonesia, with its established textile industry, has become one of the leading polyester textile producers in the world. However, Indonesians per capita consumption of polyester remains low compare to the people in more industrialized nations, in fact in most cases is less than half. Unfortunately, the economic crisis in Asia region has further dampened the polyester demand in domestic market.

In 2003, there were more than 15 polyester producers in Indonesia that supplied approximately 479.500 tons PSF and 218.400 tons of PO. Since 1995, due to the relatively low polyester demand, the domestic polyester production has exceeded the demand. This situation lead to a very high competition in the domestic market. Given this situation and the current environment, it is very unlikely that a new company will enter the market in the near future. Therefore, in the years to come, the Company's main competitors will still be the domestic polyester producers, an ?Old players? on this industries. And as there is a 5% import tax on PSF and a 10% on POY, technically there are no foreign competitors in this industry.
